A client is keeping a basal body temperature chart due to infertility after 12 months of unprotected intercourse and no pregnancy. The time on the chart when there is optimal fertility is:

a. when the client's temperature is above 99 degrees
b. when there is a slight decrease in the temperature for a 24 hour period
c. when the client's temperature is stable in the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle
d. when the client's temperature varies every other day

B
One simple, noninvasive procedure to determine the timing of ovulation is the use of a basal body temperature chart. The chart is kept for a minimum of 3 months and then reviewed for normal ovulatory fluctuations in the basal temperature. During the first half of the menstrual cycle, the body temperature may remain below 98°F. At ovulation, there is often a slight decrease in the temperature for a 24-hour period. This is the optimal period of fertility.
