What is "scaffolded" writing?
When teachers initiate interactive writing, they make a line for each word in the message or sentence, stretch the words so that children can hear the sounds in each word, and either they or a child writes the words on the lines. (Often they begin with them writing the words and eventually turn the pen over to the children.) These activities build supports for children, helping them reach the goal of writing sentences themselves.
