You are the founder and president of a small business that has just reached 10 employees, and you are preparing a code of ethics for the first time. If you have decided to create the code using a team-building process, describe what steps you should take.

What will be an ideal response?

Start by getting approval from a high-level executive team or the board of directors,
or both, and then develop a unit of employees (all of them if you have 20 or less) to be the drafters. Gather ethical issues from stakeholders through interviews or focus groups and more industry-level issues from Internet or other research. Define what you want by a code, then use a team process with round-robin questions to gather a list of positive ethical behaviors from the drafting team. Boil these down to common themes, and then draft the code. Only after a draft is made should you compare this to other professional codes and revise. Use legal counsel and company leadership to further revise the code and then disseminate to the company using a careful communication strategy. Revise the code annually.
