Minority officers not only have a greater understanding of the needs of minority
communities, but also have greater credibility. One argument suggests that hiring a
workforce that reflects the demographics of a neighborhood can help increase the
positive relationships between the police and community, particularly under community
policing models. This is particularly the case amongst ethnic communities who have a
history of distrust with the police, particularly amongst immigrant and refugee
populations.
