After surgery, chemotherapy is used to kill any cancer cells left behind and cells that might have
metastasized to other sites. Combinations of chemotherapeutic drugs are more effective than
single drugs. Each drug is effective against the type of cancer being treated. When combined,
chemotherapeutic agents destroy more malignant cells and produce fewer side effects because each
drug strikes the cancer cells at a different point in the cell cycle.
