Direct —is one where the verbal message straightforwardly reveals the intent, need, want, and desire.
Indirect —is a verbal message where the intent, need, want, and desire is less obvious or obscured.
Elaborate—stresses rich, expressive language, with a lot of adjectives, sensory language, exaggerations, idiomatic expressions, similes, and metaphors.
Understated—stresses modest language, understatement, pauses, and silence.
Honorific—emphasizes a person's status in life, such as his or her professional position, social status, age, and gender.
Personal—stressed equality and being personal, such as first-name usage, direct address, and equality.
Instrumental—is the use of verbal language as a means to be goal oriented, such as when a boss gives a direction to an employee.
Affective—tends to be more process, and transaction-oriented.
