Identify and briefly explain three different types of prompts a teacher might use in the classroom to promote engagement. Give an example of at least one type of prompt a teacher would use for a student who has a speech disability.
What will be an ideal response?
Student answers will vary on this answer, yet students should be able to list three of the six types of prompts: (1) direct or indirect verbal prompts: simple statements that tell a child what to do or how to do something; (2) model prompts: actually doing or showing how to do a desired behavior; (3) partial or full physical prompts: physical support such as guiding a child’s hand or arm to assist in performing a desired behavior; (4) spatial prompts: strategic placement of an object or activity to encourage desired behavior; (5) visual/pictorial prompts: using pictures or other symbol systems to show how to accomplish a desired behavior; and (6) cued prompts: both verbal and gestural prompts that draw attention to desired behaviors. An example of how a teacher might use a prompt for a child with a speech delay or disability could be by using a direct verbal prompt, such as “can your repeat this word? “home-work.” If a child does not repeat the word, a teacher might say, “let’s break the word down. Can you say “home.” Now say “work.”
