Answer: Krashen defined FVR as "reading because you want to . . . no book report, no questions at the end of a chapter, and no looking up every vocabulary word. . . . It is the kind of reading highly literate people do all the time." Krashen's review of literature indicated that:
1. Those who say they read more read and write better.
2. Those who recognize more authors' names have read more and have superior literacy development.
3. In school, FVR results in better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development.
4. FVR is superior to direct instruction on tests of reading, vocabulary, writing, and grammar.
5. The richer the print environment, the better the literacy development.
