What is the Stroop effect and how have researchers used it as a test of attention?

What will be an ideal response?

The Stroop effect is commonly used to study attention. During the task, participants are asked to state the color of the ink used instead of reading the word. Examples of words would be RED written in blue ink and GREEN written in purple ink. Participants would need to say blue and purple instead of red and green. This task is challenging because after many years of learning to read words, it is hard for people to suppress that habit and respond to the color instead. Researchers have found that people are fairly good at the task if they aren't distracted. This test has help confirm the importance of the prefrontal cortex in directing attention.
