Critics of President Donald Trump have suggested that nobody in his “inner circle” will “stand up to him” when policies are discussed. How does the notion of deference explain this condition? Does this situation reflect a healthy argumentative atmosphere? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

The concept of deference suggests a number of factors (status, role, knowledge,
relationship, preservation, etc.), that would limit one’s willingness to argue. The result is that
many who could contribute to the decision-making process will remain silent or simply serve as
an echo chamber. Because argument assumes that sound decision-making requires comparison of
various points of view (a concept introduced in Chapter 1), this would not be a healthy
argumentative environment.
