A PERT/CPM chart is a network diagram showing each task and the connections between the tasks. It is good for viewing the dependencies between tasks and to get an overall view of the project. A Gantt chart is a bar chart and shows the duration of each task as a bar where the length corresponds to the duration of the task. It is good for monitoring a project because a calendar can be superimposed on the Gantt chart. It is easier to see what is completed and how that compares to what should have been completed by any given date.
