Consider the relationship parents have with their children. Using that relationship as an example, describe how three of the six cultural value aspects (individualism/collectivism, preferred personality, etc.) would manifest in that parent-child relations

Answer:

In relationships, those with this individualist orientation respect autonomy and independence, and they do not meddle in another's problems unless invited. For example, in cultures where individualism prevails, many children are raised to be autonomous and to live on their own by late adolescence (although they may return home for short periods after this). Their parents are expected to take care of themselves and not "be a burden" on their children when they age (Triandis, 1995). In contrast, many cultures in South America and Asia hold a more collectivistic orientation that stresses the needs of the group, as do some Hispanic and Asian Americans in the United States (Ho, Rasheed & Rasheed, 2004). In many collectivist cultures, too, children often defer to parents when making important decisions, like accepting a new job or choosing a spouse. In addition to differing on the individualism-collectivism spectrum, cultural groups may differ over the idea of the preferred personality, or whether it is more important to "do" or to "be" (Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck, 1961). In the United States, researchers have found that doing is the preferred value for many people, including European Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans ( Ting-Toomey, 1999). In general, the "doing mode" means working hard to achieve material gain, even if it means sacrificing time with family and friends. Other cultural groups, for example, many Latinos, prefer the being modeâ€"which emphasizes the importance of experiencing life and the people around them fully and "working to live" rather than "living to work" (Hecht, Sedano, & Ribeau, 1993). The preferred personality concept in the parent-child relationship is reflected in the value systems children learn from their parents
