What does it mean that the influence between stressful life events and depression is bidirectional? How could that be?
What will be an ideal response?
: It was originally thought that stressful life events predisposed individuals toward depression. This direction makes sense because such stressors could tax underdeveloped social skills, remove or minimize social support, or reinforce feelings of guilt, worthlessness and hopelessness. However, a bidirectional approach also would predict that depression increases the likelihood of experiencing stressful life events. This could be true if youths with depression elicit stressful events from the environment, perhaps due to peer rejection and social isolation which perpetuates social and other challenges.
