Good interviews should allow for mutual control by the interviewer and interviewee. A directive approach occurs when an interviewer attempts to control the aspects of the interview such as time, direction, and types of questions asked. Interviewees also exert control using a nondirective approach, such as when he or she controls the length of their questions and the subject matter especially when answering open-ended style questions.
