Longitudinal research is when data is collected at various points in time, often over the course of several years. Cross-sectional research is when data is collected at one point in time and is usually administered in the form of a questionnaire. Scenario or vignette research is when a person is provided with a realistic situation of a criminal act and then asked whether he/she would engage in the activity, his/her perceptions of getting caught, and the severity of punishment he/she would expect to receive.
