The key to forming partnerships with families is trust, but it is just one of seven partnership principles. The others are commitment, competence, reliability, advocacy, equality, and communication. The indicators for effective communication skills are listening, being friendly, being clear and honest, and providing and coordinating information. Of all these skills, really listening may be the most difficult to develop and what many families are most in need of, especially during transitions (from one grade to another, one setting to another, etc.). The textbook authors emphasize the critical importance of listening empathetically, in which educators listen with their eyes and their hearts for the feeling and meaning behind spoken words. It is a matter of putting oneself in other's positions and considering what they have been through and what their hopes and fears might be.
