Explain the process of spermatogenesis.

What will be an ideal response?

This process happens in seminiferous tubules in the testes. Hormones have significant influence, and the process starts when the hypothalamus in the brain releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) into the blood, which causes the pituitary gland cells to make follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). FSH targets the Sertoli cells in the testes while LH binds to receptors on the Leydig cells, which produces the hormone testosterone. The proteins of Sertoli cells bind with the testosterone, inducing the spermatogenic cells to develop into sperm cells. On the other hand, Sertoli cells also produce inhibin once spermatogenesis and testosterone increase. Inhibin, along with the high levels of testosterone, causes the pituitary gland to shut down due to negative feedback. The rising levels of testosterone also inhibit the hypothalamus. This leads to a reduction in GnRH production, as well as decreased production of FSH and LH and, consequently, testosterone. Once testosterone and
inhibin levels fall, the cycle begins again. This is a process that requires negative feedback, leading to steady levels of testosterone.
