What is a split sentence?

What will be an ideal response?

• Split sentences are a combination of a short jail sentence (anywhere from 30 to 180 days) and then supervision in the community on probation. The purpose of a split sentence is to provide a clear combination of punishment and rehabilitation for offenders who have not committed crimes serious enough to require a sentence of imprisonment. However, when offenders' behavior is seen as particularly irresponsible, judges may use a short jail term to get their attention and expose them to the uncomfortable environment of jail to encourage a change of attitude.
