(should include several aspects shown here) The first requirement for a court to hear a case is that the tribunal has jurisdiction over the dispute. Jurisdiction is authority of a court to hear a case and is established by a legislative statute or by the Constitution. Judges have developed rules limiting the ability of courts to decide cases before the issues have been thoroughly developed. These requirements ensure that individuals bringing a case have a personal stake in the outcome of the litigation and will function as zealous advocates. The restrictions also preserve the time and energy of judges by restricting the number of cases that they are asked to decide. Justiciability is a term that describes a number of preconditions that must be met before a court will consider a case.
