Cooperative Learning models structure, support, and leverage students' social interactions in ways that make academic learning more productive and powerful – for both group and individual learning. The five essential attributes of the Cooperative Learning models include: 1) positive interdependence, 2) individual accountability, 3) group processing, 4) promotive interaction, and 5) interpersonal and small-group skills. Positive interdependence involves working together toward a common goal in a way that supports the success of all students. Individual accountability encourages all group members to work effectively with one another because they feel that their individual efforts will be counted. Group processing involves engaging cognitively with other group members to develop new ideas, synthesize existing understandings, make decisions, and apply knowledge. Promotive interaction includes the positive social, emotional, and intellectual exchanges across students that benefit the group and the individuals therein.
