Having a disability means a person has an impairment in either sensory, physical, cognitive, or other area of functioning. This disability prevents the person from doing something in a particular way. A handicap is not the same as a disability. A handicap refers to problems a young child with a disability experiences when interacting or functioning in his or her environment. An example of a disability would be someone who is deaf. A handicap might be involved if he or she goes to the movie theater and the theater does not have services such as subtitles to accommodate deaf individuals.
