Determine the number of modular bricks needed for the wall in Figure 12.26. The windows are 4 feet high by 4 feet wide and the door is 6 feet wide by 7 feet high. Assume that 675 bricks are required for 100 square feet of wall. Add 5 percent for waste.

What will be an ideal response?

Find the net area of the wall and number of bricks as follows:

Gross wall area (sf) = 10? × 48? = 480 sf

Areas of openings (sf) = 4 × 4? × 4? + 6? × 7? = 106 sf

Net area of wall (sf) = 480 sf – 106 sf = 374 sf = 3.74 sq

Number of bricks = 3.74 sq × 675 bricks per sq = 2,525 bricks

Add waste.

Number of bricks = 2,525 bricks × 1.05 = 2,651 bricks
