Learning disabilities are caused by problems neurological mechanisms, genetics, and environmental factors. Neuroimaging technologies have revealed brain structure difference; for example, children with reading disorders typically have less activity in the left hemisphere of the brain. Genetic factors seem to account for about half of the differences experienced by students with reading disabilities. As with other disabilities, environmental factors may enhance or impede development and affect the extent to which neurological or genetic factors impact learning.
