What are the basic tenets of feminist therapy?

What will be an ideal response?

Two basic tenets are that the personal is political and the therapist-client relationship is egalitarian in nature. In terms of the personal is political stance, this suggests that the meanings of gender and power in the client’s social and cultural reality must be taken into account. Clients learn to distinguish between internal and external realities. In therapy, clients explore attitudes and values and the goal is change rather than adjustment. The egalitarian relationship between the therapist and client is the foundation of the feminist approach. The therapist becomes a real person with the client. Discussion of power and learning how to express that power without worrying about the established order is important. Goals of therapy are determined collaboratively, in which each person brings equally shared valued expertise to the process. Therapy is concerned with the client’s empowerment, personally, politically, economically, and socially.
