"Venting.""Letting it out.""Burning off steam." Critically evaluate catharsis theory with respect to relevant empirical research.

What will be an ideal response?

The catharsis theory is the idea that you can reduce physical and emotional tension following a stressor by releasing it through hitting or punching, or through journaling or drawing. Research shows that physically aggressive forms of venting only serve to increase aggression and negative feelings. Studies show that people who "vent" report feeling even more aggression afterward. Venting through drawing can also be limited in its value if the drawing is focused on expressing negativity. When people use artwork to vent their negative feelings, they continue to stay in a negative mood state. However, if people are asked to draw something happy, they do see some relief from the stress.
