Compare and contrast REM and non-REM sleep. What will be an ideal response?
Both types are changes in electrical activity of the brain as well in physiological functions that occur
during sleep. REM sleep is characterized by rapid movement of the eyes and desynchronized brain
waves; non-REM sleep is characterized by theta and delta waves, and these eye movements are
lacking. REM sleep is accompanied by increases in body movement, heart rate, breathing, blood
pressure, metabolic rate, and body temperature; but in non-REM sleep all these processes decrease.
