What theoretical perspective do structural criminologists assume? How does this relate to human nature?
What will be an ideal response?
Structural criminologists tend to assume that human nature is socially constructed, an unconstrained vision position that avers human traits and characteristics are specific to local cultures. This is in opposition to the constrained vision that maintains that there are a broad range of human universals that are common to all cultures, but upon which cultures determine their expression (Mallon, 2007). Given the socially constructed assumption, the task of structural criminologists is to discover why social animals commit antisocial acts. If human nature is socially constructed, the presence of antisocial individuals reflects defective social practices such as competitiveness, poverty, racism, inequality, and discrimination rather than defective human materials such as low self-control or a low level of empathy.
