Use your computer as both a television and a stereo. If you already have access to cable (and the cost is not prohibitive), don’t go to the expense of buying a T.V. Use the DVD/CD player in your computer to listen to music and watch movies. If you don’t have cable you can still stream many live events (such as sporting events) to stay current.
Rethink going to the movies. Do you have to see the latest blockbuster as soon as it comes out? Consider going to a matinee instead of an evening show. Prices are lower during the day and you’ll get greater mileage out of your student discount card this way. Also, check campus postings for free movies on campus. There’s a good chance that you will be able to see classics, independents, student films, and film noir at no cost.
Rent, don’t buy. Rent DVDs as a group. Pass the disk along to your responsible friends before the due date. Everyone gets to watch at a fraction of the cost to rent individually. Subscribing to a DVD rental service is also a cost-savings measure. There is more and more competition out there in this arena, so comparison shop before you subscribe.
Take advantage of free local and campus events. Many communities support free events such as concerts, arts and crafts fairs, indoor/outdoor theater, festivals, and free days at art galleries and museums. The vast majority of campuses also provide free or low cost entertainment, especially on weekends.
