Explain Merton's strain theory

What will be an ideal response?

According to Merton's strain theory, society establishes goals that we all try to achieve—the goals "worth striving for.". In U.S. culture, the most important goal is getting rich. Indeed, it's not enough just to get rich—the goal is to get as rich as possible. Although society establishes the goals, the social structure blocks some people from achieving them. This blockage creates a strain that leads more people in the lower classes than in the upper classes to commit crimes.
