Explain why it is difficult to stop the practice of female genital mutilation. How does the bioecological model explain the difficulty as well as possible solutions?
What will be an ideal response?
It is difficult to stop the practice because it is culturally acceptable to women as
well as to men. More effective are attempts to replace the surgical procedure with a
cultural ritual that serves the same purpose. This shows that the entire context must be
considered as the bioecological model suggests. Women have to deal with their
relationships with their husbands (microsystem), the interactions between other women
in their family that affect them (mesosystem), judgments of their husbands by other men
which affect their husbands’ views of them (exosystem), and cultural beliefs about the
appropriateness of being “cut” (macrosystem).
