Give an example of a “sunk cost.”
What will be an ideal response?
Sunk costs help explain why those near the end of a project are more likely to spend additional funds to finish it. In addition, sunk costs can encourage teams to become overoptimistic. The presence of the previous investment tempts decision-makers to inflate their estimates of future success. Then, too, decision-makers often labor under the illusion of control. They believe that they can control events—business trends, employee behavior, the weather—that are outside their influence.
