ANS: Ranges make it possible to group people together so that groups can be compared as if they were distinct entities. Once you have grouped people into age ranges, education ranges, etc., you can compare those groups using a cross-tabulation. Though the text does not provide this, one could see if there are systematic differences between young people, middle-aged people, and old people in the degree of confidence they have in our educational leaders. Or you could see whether people with different levels of education have different ideas about what high school students ought to learn.
