When, why, and how should controversial topics be addressed with regard to children’s books
What will be an ideal response?
The best answer to this entails an “It all depends” type of response. Much depends on the topic and the families of the children. It is often best to work in consultation with a trained counseling professional such as a social worker or psychologist when approaching this. Since these topics may include such wide ranging things as same-sex marriage, child abuse, and suicide, it is best to be very aware of the child’s family’s experience and religious beliefs. Sometimes, it is best to plan the sharing of books on some of these topics (e.g. child abuse) with individuals or small groups. At other times, the story of a celebration of the marriage of a loving same-sex couple might be fine with a larger group. In this case, the book would be presented like any other.
