Explain the politeness theory.

What will be an ideal response?

Politeness theory explains how people deal with occurrences of face threats. Face threats can involve the chance of positive face being diminished or negative face being imposed. Politeness theory describes how individuals can “save face” by determining the size of the face threat and enacting particular strategies to address the threat. Three things must be considered when determining the size of the face threat: the relationships that people share, the difference in the power of the individuals in the relationship, and the magnitude of the imposition.
