Scenario: During Joann's teenage years she had multiple sexual partners and contracted syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease. Now she is married and wants to have a child. If Joann does become pregnant, what are the risks to the fetus?

What will be an ideal response?

Students' answers may vary.
Syphilis is more damaging later in prenatal development-four months or more after conception. Rather than affecting organogenesis, as rubella does, syphilis damages organs after they have formed. Damage includes eye lesions, which can cause blindness, and skin lesions. When syphilis is present at birth, problems can develop in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.
