Describe how role disputes could contribute to the emergence of bulimia nervosa.

What will be an ideal response?

According to interpersonal theory, role disputes arise when there are mismatched expectations for behavior. As an example, a 15-year-old may think she is old enough to stay out past midnight at her boyfriend’s house when his parents aren’t home, because she believes she is essentially an adult who can make her own decisions. Her parents might instead believe that she is more like a child who needs protection and that she should only be in supervised situations with her boyfriend and a curfew at 9:00. This can lead to tension and the adolescent feeling unfairly treated and misunderstood. As a result, dysphoria may develop and the dysphoria can result in binge-eating behavior, which begins the negative reinforcement cycle that continues with purging.
