CAH serves as a natural experiment; we learn about the influence of hormones in gender
development. Women with CAH exhibit the gender-typical traits and interests of men; they excel in tasks that men perform better, they show interest in toys and play typical for boys, they are more aggressive, they are less interested in infants, and they report feeling less comfortable with gender roles. Moreover, women without CAH who were exposed to higher levels of maternal testosterone exhibited similar, although milder, patterns. These findings demonstrate that hormones have some influence on gender roles—that they are not entirely socially conditioned.
