Nuri and Sandra are young infants. Nuri's parents are committed behaviorists. Sandra's parents are firm advocates of John Bowlby's and Erik Erikson's ideas. Compare the sleeping strategies each set of parents will use and discuss whether there is a time when a particular approach might work best.
What will be an ideal response?
Nuri's parents would not want to reinforce crying, so they are unlikely to immediately respond when their baby cries out during the night. Sandra's parents will either co-sleep or come in and immediately pick their baby up when the infant cries. Research suggests that during the first few months of life, Sandra's parents may have the best approach. However, after month 5 or 6, when the cortex comes on-line, a more behavioral strategy might work best, provided that the parents' primary goal is to get a good night's sleep! However, the main strategy that promotes sleep in any baby is putting an infant "to sleep" with love.
