How can you find the hardness of a material?

What will be an ideal response?

By applying force to a material in a very small area, the hardness of that material can be found. Many hardness testing machines use a hardened steel or diamond point that is pushed into the surface of a material with a predetermined force and the resulting diameter of the dent is carefully measured.
