While most U.S. audiences will be familiar and comfortable with a linear and direct
organizational pattern, this will not be true for people of all cultures. A speaker must be
aware and sensitive to other organizational patterns that may be familiar to audiences
of other cultures. These may include a more circuitous route of illustrations or parables
or a pattern of moving from basic principles to facts and illustrations that are gradually
related to a main point. By being aware of these differences, a speaker has the ability to
adapt to diverse audiences and appreciate speakers from other cultures who may utilize
a different organizational pattern.
