Although nationalist tendencies have been in the forefront of Yugoslavia's political history for the last quarter of the twentieth century, they had not erupted into violent conflict until the civil war of the 1990s. Under his rule, the republics had been forced to keep their nationalist feelings in check. His aim was to eliminate old ethnic divisions and create a united social revolution. When he died in 1980, the old nationalist desires of the various republics were reborn. Up to this time Serbs, Croats, and Muslims had lived side by side in a form of peaceful coexistence.
