Aluminum (Group III) and silicon (Group IV) are adjacent to each other in the periodic table. Relative to aluminum silicon is less dense, has a higher melting temperature, is harder, and is very prevalent in the sand and rocks of the Earth’s crust. And yet aluminum has many more mechanical applications, such as in the structure and skin of aircraft, the cylinder heads in automobile engines, small boats, and marine engines. We will cover this later in the book, but from what you know about metals, such as aluminum, what property results in the use of aluminum in these applications rather than silicon?

At a depth of about 1030 m in the sea, the pressure has increased by 100 atmospheres (to 1.0 × 107 N/m2). By how much has 1.0 m3 of water been compressed by this pressure? The bulk modulus of water is 2.3 × 109 N/m2

A) 2.3 × 10-3 m3 B) 3.3 × 10-3 m3 C) 4.3 × 10-3 m3 D) 5.3 × 10-3 m3 E) 6.3 × 10-3 m3

A block (mass mA) lying on a fixed frictionless inclined plane is a mass ma by a cord passing over a pulley, as shown in Fig. 4-54.

(a) Determine a formula for the acceler ation of the system in terms of mA, mB, ?, and g,
(b) What conditions apply to masses mA and mp for the acceleration to be in one direction (say, ma down the plane), or in the opposite direction? Ignore the mass of the connected to cord and pulley.
