The 77-year-old client who is prescribed to use PCM after a total knee replacement is confused. What modifications should the nurse make regarding PCM for this client?
A. Place the device controls out of the client's reach.
B. Use the device only at night while the client sleeps.
C. Reduce the setting to less than 30 degrees of flexion.
D. Discontinue the treatment until the client is no longer confused.
A
Confusion, temporary or permanent, is not an indication to discontinue the prescribed PCM. However, the confused client could adjust the settings to a degree of flexion or rate that might result in injury. For this reason, the controls should not be placed where the confused client can reach them.
