Describe and discuss examples of groups that do not pass through the four stages presented in this chapter. How important is it for some groups to work though all five stages?
What will be an ideal response?
Many groups do not follow logically through the four stages listed below. While it is desirable that they do, group process depends on many factors including the ongoing motivation of members to participate, the perceived relevance of the subject matter, conflicting responsibilities of members, and unpredictable life events that may interfere with group participation. Further, there is not a clear distinction among the stages. In order to make positive impact on members, a group should enter into the third stage to some extent.
