ANSWER: The prevalence of intellectual disabilities worldwide and across all ages is estimated at 1
percent of the total population (Maulik et al., 2011). For school-age children between
ages 6 and 21, the most recent annual report from the U.S. Department of Education
(2014) reported that approximately 414,000 students were labeled as having intellectual
disabilities and were receiving services under IDEA. Approximately 7 percent of all
students with disabilities between the ages of 6 and 21 are identified as having
intellectual disabilities.
