Why are bacteria not found in the small intestine?

The small intestine contains microvilli that optimize absorption of nutrients. These cells are very delicate and would be easily destroyed by bacteria. If bacteria adhere to the cells of the small intestine, they would interfere with both final digestion of nutrients as well as the absorption of nutrients into the blood.
