Is literacy achievement in crisis in American Schools?

What will be an ideal response?

Over the past three decades, US students have performed steadily on the NAEP. There have been slight increases in some age groups. Students demonstrate abilities to answer basic comprehension questions, but have difficulty with higher-level thinking in relation to reading. The rate of comprehension based silent reading comprehension has declined significantly since 1960 suggesting that students do not read a much as they once did.An achievement gap exists for students below the poverty line in comparison to middle-class students, as well as a gap between African American, Latino, and American Indian students in comparison to White students. This is a troubling statistic for our neediest students.
