Explain how gum disease can increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). How can this be prevented?

What will be an ideal response?

In observational studies, periodontal disease has been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, respiratory and kidney disease, and certain cancers. The oral bacteria that build up with dental plaque are believed to enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation, formation of blood vessel plaque, and blood clotting, and thus increase the risk for heart attack. A tooth abscess, a pus-filled bacterial infection inside the tooth or between the tooth and gum, can lead to a fatal condition if the infection spreads to the brain or heart, or causes swelling in the airways that cuts off air supply to the lungs. Both the American Heart Association and the American Dental Association, however, concur that the observational data do not prove conclusively that gum disease directly contributes to CVD. Most likely, periodontal disease and CHD share common risk factors such as smoking and diabetes. Avoiding sugar-filled sweets and drinks, thoroughly rinsing the mouth with water following food consumption, regular brushing, using an electric toothbrush, daily flossing, scraping the tongue, and irrigating the gums with water are all preventive measures that will help protect from gum disease.
