How do "get tough on criminals" policies often negatively impact correctional officers? Do you think that the need to ensure prison conditions are tough and unpleasant justifies the poor working conditions in which correctional officers must ope

? Justify your response.

Answers will vary but should discuss the way that many prisons today actively focus on creating unpleasant conditions that exacerbate the impact of incarceration on inmates. These may include uncomfortable temperatures (such as a lack of air conditioning in facilities); constant noise; limited inmate access to recreational activities and television; poor food; etc. However, these conditions also negatively impact the correctional officers who work in the facilities. Correctional officers working in harsher prison conditions have increased levels of substance use (tobacco and alcohol), increased sick leave use, higher stress levels, and exhibit a variety of medical problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, mental health issues, and cardiovascular disease. Answers should discuss whether these effects are justified given the belief that a tougher prison reduces crime.
