The operating room represents the epitome of teamwork. When members become part of the perioperative team, many aspects of group dynamics come into play and members' behaviours are often influenced by the situation and the ways in which information is exchanged. Back-up behaviour, i.e. shift workload among members to achieve balance during periods of high workflow demand.

Establish a shared mental model, i.e. anticipate and predict each other's needs based on prior knowledge.
Create an atmosphere of mutual trust through information sharing, willingness to admit to mistakes.
Consistency of team—working together with the same team builds trust, understanding of how team members work, communication, respect and confidence.
Team briefings—everyone understands the procedure (shared mental model), possible complications, special equipment required, has opportunity to ask questions.

Making sure the surgeon/anaesthetist preference lists are up-to-date—ensures that all supplies and equipment are available to enable smooth running of a procedure.
Team debriefing sessions—to review a difficult procedure or one that went particularly well. This provides the opportunity to emphasise the positives and learn what could have been done better without resorting to a blame culture.
